I had totally forgotten about Sonic Boom for months and months, and I saw a playthrough of the first hour or so of Rise of Lyric and... it's not very good. XD; So far it feels like they've treated Amy's personality with more respect than she's seen in other games, but Knuckles gets even more over-the-top unintelligent, up to and including having to do the left-hand trick to determine the difference between left and right. And also I've heard that Amy spends the 3DS game kidnapped, which is. Well.

Haven't seen enough of Sonic and Tails's characterizations to judge them, but the writing is not that great? And the gameplay looks really tedious. Meh.

Shadow is mysteriously not redesigned, and while he hasn't done more than make a brief cameo in the playthrough I saw I heard that he was stripped of all his sympathetic qualities and his motivation for hating Sonic boils down to "because people who like friendship are silly" >__>

Also Knuckles looks weird??

I'm actually getting Christmas presents this year, so happy! Of course I don't know what they are yet, hahaha. One thing I need is more lamps, everywhere-- it's so dark and unhappy in this house. Oh, and I got a computer chair yesterday! Now I can sit at my desk without hurting myself!

I've realized that I have exactly one OT3, and that's Shepard/Nihlus/Saren. LOLOLOL. Together they could make a pretty functional and healthy relationship, assuming a No Reapers AU or something. And of course it's a lot more likely than, say, Shepard/Saren by themselves. Saren would despise Shepard without Nihlus's intervention, and even a Paragon Shepard's diplomacy couldn't change that. XD;

Some time I have to do a truly aro/ace playthrough of Mass Effect. Apparently all the places in the plot with designated love interest scenes get replaced by reminiscences of whoever died in the first game, which I can live with, even if I would like to have had non-romantic scenes with other characters. I also have to do a playthrough with Kaidan instead of Ashley, but like. I love Ashley so much... XD; I can't get rid of her. Which is a terrible thing to say, that I would rather have her than Kaidan, but she's fabulous. Yes.

As long as I haven't got the patience to play Mass Effect again, though, I'll stick to all the stuff I have yet to finish, like, uh. Dragon Age Origins. SPEAKING OF WHICH THERE IS A TRANS MAN IN INQUISITION WHO CANONICALLY BINDS HIS BREASTS AND YOOOOOO YOU GO BIOWARE. And he's voiced by Jennifer Hale! It'd be better if they actually got a trans man to voice him, but getting a cis woman might be the next best thing? Hm, I'll have to think about that... Now I have to get into the Dragon Age series, and money... ...Of course I still have problems with all the other irritating things Bioware has done, but this is a step up, man.

Speaking of Jennifer Hale, I have to make an entry complaining about Other M sometimes. It's one of those things I actually enjoy complaining about, without anger, so it'll be fun.

Also, the Beta of Kerbal Space Program is in experimentals! There's so much new stuff, I'm so excited! SPACE! \o/

I'm going to be so happy when this semester is over. I am so ready to not have some of these classes anymore.

EDIT: OH ACTUALLY, I forgot to mention! I watched Revolutionary Girl Utena! It's definitely up there with Princess Tutu as one of the best animes I've seen. I love it so much, laksdjljsd, but this post is long enough so I'll talk about that later.
Current Mood: blahblah

I've seen some of the Sonic Boom comics, and have not been happy at all with Knuckles' characterization. As if things weren't bad enough with him being stereotyped as gullible, now Boom has to go even further and make him big and dumb all around. The real Knuckles should punch him in the face for daring to call himself Knuckles.

And Shadow ... oh my gosh. **headdesk.** Boom is totally ruining the best characters in the series. Sonic X already made fun of Knuckles and Espio for being serious (although they were great with Shadow), but Boom ... gaaaah.

You haven't had Christmas presents for a while?!

Computer chairs are wonderful things! My poor one is falling apart like whoa; the seat is coming open and the left arm lost its stuffing and became unscrewed years ago. I never screwed it back in because I seemed to manage fine without it. The right arm is loose and needs screwing in again, and dang, I need a new chair but I've used this one for what must be twelve years or more and I can't bear to give it up while it's still usable. I'm such a sentimental sap.

LOL. If one character would despise the other without the third one's intervention, I'm not sure I see the logic in the first and second characters being in an OT3 together.

It's definitely hard to give up a character you already love for another one you're not familiar with!

Yay, that's great that the semester is over!

Oh good, someone who has seen Utena! I've always wanted to but have held back for certain reasons. Tell me, how much do they dwell on the incestuous things? That's what probably bothers me the most about the series.

Oh maaaaan, Knuckles being gullible seems so much better when you've seen Sonic Boom things >__> Even as a kid I was perfectly happy with his old characterization, so the one rational reason I could think of for the change (because they wanted a more kiddy feel...?) doesn't really hold either.

I'm glad I didn't stick around to see Shadow's role in the game, because I'd have been pretty upset. I don't mind serious characters, but you can't get rid of all the other things about them and expect people to like it!

We always make sure to have at least one each a year, but this year Dad got a job, so it'll probably feel a little more like Christmas. They're also a surprise, which is a new thing lately. XD

There really is a sort of security in old things-- even if you need a new one, of course you want to keep the old one if you can use it. But oh, man, your poor chair. Good luck with it-- maybe duct tape could lengthen its lifetime a little? Hm...

There really is no logic-- it hinges on Extenuating Circumstances and Third Person Beating Him Over the Head causing the first character to get past his prejudices, but once it is dealt with the dynamic is really interesting. It's only remotely possible in a big ol' AU though, because of those characters, one is the protagonist, one is the antagonist, and the third dies in the first ten minutes of the first game...

I knooow, I want to give Kaidan a chance, but I love Ashley so much... Wah.

Hm... it's hard to decide the proper ratio of No Spoilers to Explanation. The show is largely an examination of unhealthy relationships, so I promise it's obvious the writers definitely don't condone incest, at least. XD; Depends on what you mean by "dwell on." The incestuous things mostly take the form of characters acting very possessive towards their siblings, in a way that reminds people of jealous lovers. They try to make you keep it in mind when you see the choices they make, but any explicitly incestuous stuff is pretty far between and only for a couple seconds.

Of course, some of it is pretty plot-important, so in that sense you're not going to be able to pretend it's not happening. Is that what you mean?

I wouldn't be surprised if they're just plain trying to dumb everything down for some equally dumb reason. Ugh. It could be for the kiddies, which doesn't make much sense, but then again, so many things done for the kiddies don't make sense these days either.

I usually love serious characters above all else, so I hate when they're made fun of for being serious. But even that's better than destroying a really intriguing and heartbreaking backstory for a character and cheapening them.

Ahh, awesome! That will be fun. And surprises totally rule.

LOL. Well, intriguing dynamics are always enjoyable. I'm curious as to how there's even much canon interaction to form the idea around, though, if one's only there for ten minutes. (I suppose I could probably do it easily, however, since I adore characters who only appear in one episode of a TV show, for example.)

That's good to hear. I don't think I'd be too bothered by how they handle it, then.

I've tried to have faith in Sonic things lately, but this is seriously testing me. Guys no, I was a kid once, I promise this was not necessary.

Ah, I get it-- like, come on guys, don't do them like that. But yeah anything seems better after Sonic Boom-- the Amy thing is the ONLY good thing I can think of about it, forget anything involving improvement. Knuckles and Shadowwwww ))):

I CAN'T WAIT it'll be so much fun!

The one conversation with Dies First is him being unusually respectful to Shepard-- his people had been at war with humanity thirty years previous, hence Other Guy's prejudice, so you quickly learn after his death that his friendly and respectful attitude is rare. It really is a case of a short-lived character transcending his screentime for me-- it did come about because of a well-written fanfic, so maybe you could do it. XD

(It's actually even worse than you're imagining: Other Guy is the one who kills Dies First, even though they're obviously old friends. Spoilers: he's being mind-controlled. Like I said, seriously AU.)

The one other thing I'd warn you about is that it's deliberately pretty creepy at times. But otherwise, I hope if you end up watching it that you enjoy it.
Lucky_Ladybug: nancy_peterinsaneladybug on December 8th, 2014 07:40 am (UTC)
Totally. The old Sonic stuff was perfectly acceptable. The bad guys were pretty dumbed down in The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog series, but the good guys weren't. **headdesk.**

Yeah, it would be nice to see Amy being written better (no hitting people left and right!), but not at the expense of Knuckles and Shadow!

Oooh, that is intriguing.

(Gah. How heartbreaking! Does he find out what he did when he comes out of the mind-control?)

Like, psychologically creepy or do bizarre physical things happen to characters?
NortheasternWind: Tearsnortheastwind on December 10th, 2014 01:39 am (UTC)
Ah, that series-- Scratch and Grounder, or something like that? But yeah, EEERGH. I try so hard not to complain, but how can I not >__>

(It's permanent, unfortunately-- whether or not he realizes he's being mind controlled is up to the player. If not you fight and kill him, and if so you still don't get to see his emotional reaction, because he thanks you and ends it himself before he can do any more harm. D:)

Psychologically (there is one episode with an unexplained transformation, but it's more of the "...W H A T" kind than the creepy kind). I just felt obligated to mention it XD
Lucky_Ladybuginsaneladybug on December 10th, 2014 02:12 am (UTC)
Yeah, those idiots. And indeed, it sounds like Boom is basically a travesty. There's no way not to complain.

(Oh gosh, how depressing.)

Yes, thanks for the warning! I'll keep that in mind. By the way, where did you see it? I know it's a fairly old anime by now. Is it floating around on YouTube or did you get discs from Netflix or somewhere? Unfortunately, those websites devoted specifically to watching anime usually don't load right for me. I tried several of them recently when I wanted to watch a Japanese language Sailor Moon SuperS episode instead of the English dub available on YouTube.

MMMMMMPH I'll just go back to Sonic Adventure 2 and all the other stuff I like >__>

(T__T Fanfic. The solace of video gamers everywhere.)

I just watched the dub on Youtube. Bizarrely, I couldn't find subs past the third episode, although they're all there now... Weird. I guess I just really suck at searching. I only ever saw the dub, so I can't say if there are any significant errors in it. Ugh, I'm sorry about the anime websites. I know Hulu is irritating for you, that must be so frustrating.
Lucky_Ladybug: riddlerinsaneladybug on December 10th, 2014 02:48 am (UTC)
Good plan.

(Yess. It definitely helped me with FF7.)

Awesome! Glad it's on YouTube in some form. That will definitely spur me to try it sooner rather than later, I think. Thanks; it does get very frustrating when most websites other than YouTube and MeTV won't play videos correctly.
